[Week 2] – Dax Nagtegaal’s Review

[ROM][AOSP][5.1.1]Dirty Unicorns Bacon 9.4

Introduction

For some reason I have always thought that DU was based off CM, but it’s not, only just a few hours ago when I was looking stuff about the ROM up I found out that it’s actually based off AOSP since Lollipop. Not sure why that’s relevant to my review or why I’m even telling you, but I was struggling with words and couldn’t write an introduction for the life of me, so here you go..

UI Feel and Smoothness

The first thing that I noticed about DU is how fast it is, seriously, it is very fast. So fast that I quickly caught on to their cheaty illusion of turning the animation speed from the default 1.0 to 0.5x speed which made everything seem a lot faster, so for fair comparison I turned it back to 1.0x speed. I’m telling you this because I know that some people will tell me “Oh DU just seems fast because they turned the animation speed up”, so I want to prevent that.

That said though, DU is still very very smooth and responsive, it’s impressive. While switching between apps, launching new apps, everything happens very quickly, assuming you have them loaded in RAM (in the recent apps panel). Seriously people, stop closing your apps all the time, it doesn’t help at all.

Every app that I’ve used has been smooth and lag-free, switching between apps is very fast. On DU 9.3 there was a super annoying problem where the recent apps button would just not work the first few times you pressed it but that’s fixed in 9.4 and everything is quick and smooth now.

Battery Life

Battery life has been very good, I’ve been averaging around 6 hours of SOT and a full day (9AM – 11:30PM) of use. There’s not much more to say about it than that, there are some screenshots of my battery stats down below. My usage is mainly messaging apps and web browsing on WiFi with fairly low brightness, but even on days where I was outside on LTE and full brightness for an hour I still got great SOT.

Day 1: http://imgur.com/a/punRu
Day 3: http://imgur.com/a/piJ3h
Day 4: http://imgur.com/a/F3SxX – That weird gap was a random reboot, the only one in 6 days though.
Day 5: http://imgur.com/a/eq2kx – This was a weird day, I have no idea what happened here, but still got 5h30m of SOT.
Day 6: http://imgur.com/a/JTUIQ – I rebooted about 4 times this day and still got 7h of SOT, inside on WiFi all day.

Features and Customizability

Feature wise, DU is pretty awesome. It doesn’t have everything, but it has more than enough. App Circle Sidebar, OmniSwitch, Gestures Anywhere, lots of status bar customisations, Ad blocker, Wakelock blocker and the usual customisations.

It also has a very good looking, somewhat useless task killer built into the notification panel. As I said before, closing/killing apps all the time isn’t a good thing so I don’t recommend using this feature too much, but it’s a nice thing to have.

Overall Impressions and stability.

Overall I’ve really enjoyed my time on this ROM, the 9.3 build had this very very annoying bug where the recent apps button just didn’t work the first few presses, that was fixed in the initial 9.4 build. 9.4 broke NFC, which was fixed the next day so I can’t really complain about that.

App Ops also does not work, at all, trying to change an apps’ permissions just crashes settings, so if you value that then you shouldn’t flash this ROM.

In conclusion

Fast, stable and nice on the battery. This is definitely a good daily driver, everything works and I would recommend it to anyone that’s looking for a reliable and balanced ROM.

Great stuff Dax ,I´ve been waiting to read this before I tried DU and you´ve convinced me to give it a go later in the week.
I also love the fact you couldn´t resist this “Seriously people, stop closing your apps all the time, it doesn’t help at all.” You´re such a stickler for details ; ) love it.

Good point about the speed and not wrong about the battery. I know DU says its AOSP with Omni features but to me its more like an Omni-based ROM because they both have similar limiting features. Me probably barking up the wrong tree here.

Found another annoying bug where sometimes app window is blacked out when launched from recent apps. But since this is a rare ROM that streams BBC iPlayer fine, its a good trade-off for iPlayer fans. The bug itself is at app level so only requires a relaunch as opposed to a reboot.

Good, easy to digest review. Perfect for my very tired brain. :)

    excellent review.

I should give this another shot. I remember I long pressed an app in the app drawer and some graphical glitch appeared in place of Uninstall/App info/Edit.

I was so mad that I wiped DU and I clean flashed another ROM. Petty, I know. I was enjoying it for the 2 hours that I used it, though.

I have enjoyed reading reviews on this site immensely. While I’m satisfied with my current ROM I at least took a few hours to look at some reviewed ROMs. Had some fun with it.

That being said, I unfortunatelly feel that this “review” diminishes the value of the site. It is poorly written with the same points made again and again, not in an elegant way either I might add. Nothing tragic, some people can write and others can’t.

This is just my honest opinion as apprently at least three people enjoyed it. :)

    Kind regards.

Umm… Okay, thank you for the positive feedback on the site as a whole and I’m glad that you’re enjoying it, but could you tell me what I could improve rather than telling me that I suck?

I don’t think I repeated anything in my review, and I don’t think my writing is bad. I wrote one of the most comprehensive and appreciated guides on the Oneplus forums and a few other well received… and not very well received posts but I’ve never heard anyone tell me this before, so I’d appreciate it if you went into more detail than “You can’t write.”

I realize my comment was harsh and I should have been more comprehensive with my criticism, I apologize. You certainly deserve as much.

I find your writing very dry and didn’t really see your character come through in it. With that I believe comes the lack of style – a style of writing, especially about personal experiences, really shines when you put your all into it. It just felt it was thrown together very quickly. With other reviews I could see the writer in front of me, either having fun or being annoyed/frustrated. A broader vocabulary would certainly come in handy also.

To your point; in my opinion writing a guide (do a, b, c), while it certainly isn’t easy making it understandable to everybody, is very different from writing a review. Again there is the injection of personal character that makes the reading fun.

Regarding making the same point over and over I should have been more careful. It mostly applies to the “UI Feel and Smoothness” part, where you point out the same thing several times, without much content inbetween. I woulnd’t have gotten this impression if the reading would have been fun (character, style). But try to refrain from using the same words and phrases too much, it makes it tedious.

I do have some other points but do not feel they would help you improve in any way (I’m not sure some of my previous points will either when I think about it), I would just like to point out one more thing. While conclusions are supposed to be brief I think yours was too short and didn’t wholly reflect what you wrote before.

Once more, this is my opinion, and while my initial comment was, granted, quite harsh, it was just the first reaction after reading your review.

    Kind regards.

Here we go, I can do something with this, thank you! 😛

Do you have the same opinion about my previous review on XenonHD? Because you’re right about this review, it was thrown together quite quickly as I was really struggling with my (last minute) writing, I couldn’t find the right words for anything and I hadn’t had time to even start on my review until only a few hours before the planned release. I really shouldn’t write while I’m tired because you’re right about me repeating myself too, I just re-read my own review and it is annoying indeed..

Next time I post (Wednesday) I’m going to try and make it a little more personal and take more time for it.
